Faculty profile: Allyson Phillips

Dr. Allyson Phillips began her studies in psychology assuming her path would lead her to counseling, but a professor encouraged her along the way to consider focusing on research. It was Ouachita’s empirical approach to studying psychology, research and observation-based learning that drew her to OBU. She now serves as assistant professor of psychology and chair of the Department of Psychology.

Previously published in the 2019 Ouachitonian yearbook Hayden Reedy, a freshman communications and media major from Dallas, Texas, had a dream. However, it wasn’t the typical childhood dream of being a famous singer or athlete. Hayden dreamed of a career in law enforcement. “They could carry guns and drive fast,” said Reedy. “For a little boy, that was interesting.”

Ouachita Baptist University’s Dr. Bethany Hicks, associate professor of history, authored a chapter essay titled “Germany” in the book East Central European Migrations During the Cold War: A Handbook, published in May 2019. The volume is a compilation of essays written by historians, sociologists and political scientists from eight countries.

When I was 14 years old, I knew I had to go to a place that I had only just heard of: Ouachita Baptist University. Over the course of a summer, I realized I felt called to go into ministry. I only knew a few others who shared my call, and each one of them desired to go to “OBU.” I saw spiritual leader after spiritual leader attend Ouachita, and my own path was made clear. While my academic numbers made any college in the country an option, my heart only chose one: Ouachita.

Finding opportunity in unfamiliar places: A first-generation student's journey

I considered myself to be an “average student” in high school. I wasn’t enrolled in gifted and talented courses, and college wasn’t highly spoken of within my immediate family. My mother received her GED and attended cosmetology school. As my brothers and I got older, she would tell us that she knew college wasn’t for everyone, but that she hoped we would go because she wanted us to have the experience that she missed out on for many years.
